Wax & Wane

Exhibition Dates: June - September 2022

Circles, cycles, and gravitational pulls. The Moon is a natural symbol of our humanity and in its light we tend to the ones we love, explore our dreams, and see our place in time. Both a literal and metaphorical light in the darkness, legends of The Moon are present in cultures across continents and throughout history. What does The Moon mean to us today?

From Fiber

Exhibition Dates: January 3 - April 1, 2022

Fiber Art is like a portal to another time. The soft, tactile nature of this medium transports us to our past experiences and beyond to events we were and weren’t yet present for. From Fiber explores family connections through the medium of Fiber Art.

Accepting the Unexpected

Exhibition Dates: August 2021

Pregnancies, weather events, pandemics -- what do we do when life “happens?” How does the creation of artwork aid with communicating the feelings that come with these unexpected events? With special attention to the context of each accepted artwork, this exhibition explores how artists process unexpected life events through their artistic practice.

The work selected for this exhibition is both vulnerable and beautiful, and we are deeply grateful to the artists for trusting Stay Home Gallery with their stories.

Scrappy: Exploring Contemporary Fiber Art

January 4 - April 2, 2021

Fiber, and its relation to women and domesticity has been a grounding theme of fiber art over time, but has taken on new meaning after the events of 2020. Gender, politics, and the home are all themes in the work by artists featured in “Scrappy: Exploring Contemporary Fiber Art” at The Marnie Sheridan Gallery at Harpeth Hall. All of the artwork featured in Scrappy was created in 2020 during a time of isolation and dramatic cultural shifts. Fiber art is an accessible medium because fiber is all around us. It’s in our clothing, our blankets, and even our Amazon boxes. You can make meaningful, thought provoking, and beautiful art from disparate pieces of fiber -- you just have to be a little scrappy.

Suffragist: Work Inspired by the Ratification of the 19th Amendment Featuring Work by the Tennessee Art League

October 19 - December 18, 2020

Harpeth Hall celebrates the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment with the Tennessee Art League’s exhibition “Suffragist” available for viewing in person here in the Marnie Sheridan Gallery. The historic Tennessee Art League presents an exhibition of art in celebration of the anniversary of the historic ratification of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution. The Tennessee Art League (TAL) was founded in Nashville in 1954 and has welcomed into membership hundreds of artists in our area over the years. Visual artists of every medium, from beginners to professional, have found community and opportunities to share, develop and display their work through the TAL. Our members are proud this year to present works that commemorate this momentous Nashville and US decision to expand the right to vote to women.

Off the Canvas:
Tess Davies

October 21, 2019 - January 17, 2020
Reception: November 14, 6:30 pm - 8pm

The Marnie Sheridan Gallery at Harpeth Hall is excited to present Off the Canvas featuring work by local artist and Harpeth Hall alumna, Tess Erlenborn Davies '10. Through the expression of abstract forms and familiar natural objects, Tess explores how two disparate things exist together in a space on - or off - the canvas. Stillness and movement, color and contrast, human and nature, and structure and looseness all exist together in her work that has paint extend off the canvas and onto gallery walls. Tess is also the recipient of this year's Carell Artist in Residence at Harpeth Hall and will be working with art students this January during Winterim to create a unique work of art that incorporates her signature style.
